Diabetes, watch your feet!

Patient Stories & Testimonials about Coastline Foot & Ankle in Salem and Dallas OR.

As October left us, it gave a last hurrah with Halloween and kicked off the beginning of holiday sweets. November brings a plethora of pies cookies and baked holiday goods as

we roll from Thanksgiving to Christmas parties. Between family and work events, the temporary holiday’s treats and traditions become permanent dietary habits. You are what

you eat. However, November is also national Diabetes month, for 2015 the American Diabetes Association’s theme is “Eat well, America!” So this holiday season, Coastline foot

and Ankle is showing their support, by raising awareness. Just because it may not affect your life, doesn’t mean that it isn’t a prevalent problem in our culture today. Did you know

that diabetes affects nearly 30 MILLION children and adults in the U.S. today—nearly 10{87d22db1c11ac0a60522f1349ce561093711480aaf7b8c2997d592d95a8b15f0} of the population. Not only that, but another 86 million Americans have prediabetes and

are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Impressively every 19 seconds someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with diabetes. You may wonder what this may have to do with a foot and

ankle clinic; believe it or not, but 25{87d22db1c11ac0a60522f1349ce561093711480aaf7b8c2997d592d95a8b15f0} of people with diabetes will develop foot ulcers. Foot ulcers precede 85{87d22db1c11ac0a60522f1349ce561093711480aaf7b8c2997d592d95a8b15f0} of lower extremity amputations. Foot ulcers are just the beginning. The

rate of amputation for people with diabetes is 10 times higher than for people without diabetes. Yikes! Every hour, ten Americans undergo amputation due to diabetes. The

doctors in our clinic perform these amputation surgeries that could easily have been prevented. Had the patients taken care of their diabetes, and regularly visited a podiatrist

this could be a different ending. Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes by 2050 unless we take steps. So join with Coastline Foot and

Ankle, and help raise diabetes awareness. Together we can prevent future diagnosis and help those in our lives with diabetes.
